Perfect kayaker abode? No hole in a wall

A few months ago, I was pondering how to fit a new, 17-foot kayak into a garage space that was, well, not quite 17 feet long. No matter how many times I measured it. I began dreaming about the perfect kayaker home solution, other than a suggestion from one paddling pal: “We’ll just knock a small hole in the wall of your house...”

Nah, something a bit more elegant. What would the ideal kayaker abode look like? First, as the real estate agents say, “location, location, location.” Then there’s getting kayaks into and out of storage easily. Plus a low-maintenance exterior and simple landscaping – after all, you don’t need to waste time on a house when you can be on the water.

Turns out at least one version of this kayaker dream is real, and on the American River. It’s a tad post-modern-minimalist for my taste, but looks easy to clean – except  for the windows! Take a lookifornia kayak dream paddling
